West Ashley, or as it's more formally known as west of the Ashley, is one of the six distinct areas of the city of Charleston. Its name is derived from the fact that the land is west of the Ashley River. It is flanked by the scenic waterfront vistas and marshes of the Ashley and Stono Rivers.
With its quality of life and proximity to downtown, West Ashley continues to be a popular place for new homeowners. From the bungalows in close-in West Ashley to the newer neighborhoods (Carolina Bay, Bolton’s Landing and Magnolia Bluff) just outside of I-526, West Ashley continues to thrive. Last month 199 homes were sold at a median price of $249,500.
For those wishing to enjoy the outdoors, West Ashley has plenty to offer: golfing at Shadowmoss, biking, and several public boat ramps along with Ripley Marina directly across from downtown. The West Ashley Greenway, a popular trail that parallels Savannah Highway, and West Ashley bikeway both offer bikers an opportunity to enjoy marsh and river views.
Drayton Hall, Magnolia Plantation and Middleton Place, three of Charleston’s most popular plantations dating back to the Revolutionary War, are along the banks of the Ashley River. Dining and shopping abound in West Ashley. The region's largest indoor shopping mall, Citadel Mall, is located in here. Across the Ashley River and only minutes from downtown Charleston, the Avondale Entertainment District hosts many of the areas favorite restaurants and bars.
West Ashley is home to many favorite neighborhoods both old and new. The Crescent, Avondale, and Byrnes Down are older neighborhoods that are less than three miles from the downtown peninsula. Neighborhoods such as Shadowmoss and Carolina Bay are newer, larger neighborhoods outside I-526.
